CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The 17th annual Empty Bowls fundraising event began Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, where dozens gathered to enjoy soup and raise awareness about food insecurity. The event brings together local churches and organizations to fight hunger. Between Feb. 9 and 23, different churches and organizations across Montgomery County will host lunch or dinner events featuring a variety of soups, bread and dessert.

Proceeds from the event help fund hot meals and food boxes for thousands in the community.

“We’ve been participating in Empty Bowls for about 13 years, but hosting at First Presbyterian for probably the last 10,” said Kris Foust, a volunteer at the event. “We’ve always had painting parties and participated in various locations, but the program has grown to encompass more locations, more churches, and more civic organizations, and now it’s on multiple days rather than just one day choosing lunch or dinner. So it has grown dramatically in the last 15 years.”

The bowls are painted throughout the year. “Our bowls come from SpiritFest, which happens on the first Saturday in December,” said Foust. “We host a painting party at the church and paint anywhere from 25 to 50 bowls.” Foust explained that the painting and firing of the bowls are done well in advance to make sure they are ready by February. “By the beginning of January, the painting parties are finished, and the bowls are dried and ready to go.”
