CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Clarksville-Montgomery County Arts and Heritage Development Council honored two community leaders with Lifetime Achievement Awards Monday at its 18th annual membership gathering.
Charlsie Halliburton received the Lifetime Achievement in Art Award, and Sarah Darnell received the Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Award. The awards were presented in the Austin Peay State University Trahern Theatre. Darnell was not able to attend the award ceremony, and her award was accepted by her son Tom Darnell.
Arts and Heritage Council Executive Director Dr. Ellen Kanervo praised both award recipients. “I think that Sarah Darnell and Charlsie Halliburton are two of the most impressive people that I know. They have done so much for this community, and I am so pleased that we are honoring them,” she said.
Halliburton made many contributions to Clarksville’s artistic culture through her work in ballet and through her support for numerous creative organizations and activities. From 1983 until her retirement in 2016, she taught classical ballet to hundreds of girls, who benefitted not only from the skills they learned but also from the knowledge of dance that she included in her lessons.
Halliburton has served as an officer on the boards of the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, APSU Candlelight Ball, Clarksville Arts and Heritage Council, a member of the Gateway Chamber Orchestra, YMCA, and Nashville Ballet board of Directors.
Darnell kept the memories alive of Montgomery County’s heritage as a prominent county in the Black Patch tobacco growing region. She gave many talks on the history of tobacco growers, including the dark period of the Tobacco Wars in the early 1900s to school children and to community organizations.
She also worked with the Clarksville Writers Conference for several years to help organize city tours of places associated with local authors. Darnell is also a long-time active member of the Montgomery County Historical Society.
Prior to the awards ceremony, Austin Peay alumni David Alford and Paul Binkley reprised their “A Christmas Memory,” based on the holiday essay by Truman Capote, at the Trahern Theatre.
