Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee host Code Academy for youth in Clarksville

CLARKSVILLER TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee (BGCMT) hosted a Code Academy this week to introduce Clarksville youth to coding and app opportunities, as they look to expand their operations in Montgomery County.
During the three-day coding camp, 45 students participated, including 11 high school students from Clarksville-Montgomery County schools on Wednesday, July 3.
Eric Higgs, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, talked about the Code Academy saying, “The Code Academy is a program we launched in Middle Tennessee in partnership with Apple. Apple donated 70 iPad’s and came up with the program that was intended to expose young people to that future career path, coding, you hear so much about it.”
BGCMT announced plans to expand their operations in Clarksville community last week with an anticipated opening date of next year. “The goal of Boys & Girls Club is we want to enable all youth, but especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential,” Higgs said.
Tennessee State Representative for District 67, Ronnie Glynn, was one of the judges at the Coding Academy along with Sherry Lawdermilt, Phil Minshew and Jarad Sneed, from the IT Department at Austin Peay State University.
“Obviously the kids are our future and it’s so important that we make sure that we provide an environment for them to prosper along the way. The Boys & Girls Club gives them that,” Glynn told Clarksville Now.
Deidre Ward, chairman of the local committee that was formed to assist the Boys & Girls Club with their move to Clarksville, said they are working with the organization to bring a Boys and Girls Club to Clarksville in June of 2025. “We have a task force that we put together here, and we have been working diligently on that task,” Ward said.
