Clarksville commemorates 1862 surrender with living history event at Fort Defiance | PHOTOS

CLARKSVILLE, TN – History came to life at Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center on Saturday, Feb. 22, as visitors stepped back in time to commemorate the 1862 surrender of Clarksville and Fort Defiance to Union soldiers. The annual event featured living history demonstrations, cannon firings, and immersive educational experiences.
Uniformed historical interpreters engaged with guests, showcasing the daily life of Civil War soldiers and the significance of Fort Defiance during the war. The event also included artillery demonstrations, giving attendees a glimpse into 19th-century military tactics.




Visitors explored the Fort Defiance interpretive center, which houses exhibits detailing Clarksville’s role in the Civil War, and watched Crossroads of Change. This short film tells the story of the city’s wartime occupation and transition. Despite chilly weather, the event drew a steady crowd of history enthusiasts, families, and students eager to learn more about Clarksville’s past.
