Clarksville writers to be featured in Scary Horrors: Halloween Season Stories during ArtWalk

CLARKSVILLE, TN – Looking for stories that gnaw on your backbone and latch onto your psyche long after you’ve left the venue? The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center presents Scary Horrors: Halloween Season Stories at First Thursday Art Walk, 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 5.

Horror flash fiction, a demonic house’s secrets, and freaky fairytales by Clarksville writers from CECA’s Community School of the Arts Creative Writing program. Four adult writers from the program will read from their work. They are Sondra Abanto, Jeff Bagley, Chrissy Hicks, and Jen Rohe. All four writers have been students in Shana Thornton’s Writing for Military and Families class, a class for students affiliated with the military, though the students write in a variety of styles and about subject matter beyond their military experiences and affiliations.

The students have been writing novels or memoirs, with some taking Thornton’s class for years. The Writing for Military and Families Class began in 2017 as a free class offered by the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts’ (CECA) Community School of the Arts to adult writers with a connection to the military.

In order to involve design students in the community, Thornton reached out to the Rossview High School Academy of Media Arts and Technology (AMAT) and asked teacher Hannah Brooks if some of her students would be interested in competing to design the flyer for the reading event. They were, and two finalists were chosen. Senior Aislinn Moran was the runner-up. Karalina Medeiros, also a senior, designed the winning flyer.

The Scary Horrors reading event is open to the public, and will take place in the Customs House Museum’s theatre at 6 p.m. on Oct. 5. Based on the scary content of the stories, this reading event is recommended for adult audiences only.
