CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Dozens of community members gathered at the Tennessee Triumph statue in downtown Clarksville Saturday to participate in the People’s March, organized by Clarksville Indivisible and the Montgomery County Democratic Women’s Caucus. The event’s purpose was to bring people together that are concerned about civil rights, gender equality, and challenges under the new presidential administration.

The march began at 1 Public Square and ended at the County Courthouse. Following the march there were guest speakers, informational tables, and hot beverages for attendees. The event was part of the national Women’s March movement, which started after Trump’s first presidency.

Joy Rice, lead organizer for Clarksville Indivisible, shared the motivation behind the event. “The first time Trump got elected, about 500,000 women marched on Washington, and that formed the Women’s March. Here we are with Trump 2.0, but our focus today isn’t just on him. We wanted to create a space for people disappointed with the election outcome, worried about their loved ones, and concerned about the direction of the country. This march is about channeling that energy and anxiety into action.”

The event brought together various organizations, including Clarksville Pride, the Democratic Party and Planned Parenthood.

Rice talked about the importance of the groups working together, saying, “It’s not just Indivisible out here. We’ve invited multiple groups with common goals to come together and show unity. We know tough roads are ahead, but we’re here to face them together.”

Charles Uffelman, chair of the Montgomery County Democratic Party, said, “This is a people-led march representing a diverse coalition working folks, people fighting for a fairer economy. There’s a lot of worry about what’s coming on Jan. 20th, about the swamp getting swampier and working people being left out. Today, we’re showing Clarksville that you’re not alone. We’ve got each other, and we’ll get through this.”
