CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Fort Campbell Screaming Eagles hockey team held two charity matches on Sunday at the Ford Ice Center for a sold-out crowd, fundraising for back to school supplies.
The event was organized and orchestrated by Josh Tobin. Between ticket sales and all other fundraising, the event raised 800 dollars for the school system.
“Lot of people don’t think about how these teachers are going to come up with school supplies,” said Tobin. “We ask a lot of our teachers, especially here in Montgomery-County. The Nashville fire always do charity games, and most of us have kids that go to school here. We wanted to give something back to the community.”
As for the games themselves, Fort Campbell Black overcame an early 3-1 deficit against Fort Campbell Gold, beating them 4-3.
The game between Fort Campbell White and the Nashville Fire was a high scoring, physical affair, with 12 combined goals in the first period, to go along with 10 penalties. The scoring would cool down after the first period, as the third period would end with the two teams deadlocked at 12. With 30 seconds left in overtime, Jack Zimmer netted the game winner to elevate Fort Campbell White to a 13-12 victory.
“These guys love coming here and competing, especially in front of a sellout crowd,” said Tobin. “This is huge for them. None of us are going to the NHL, but this is a big deal, and we put on a good show this afternoon. These guys are absolutely pumped.”
